News - Mad Swede Brewing Company

Brewery and Cole Road Taproom Close

Brewer Jerry Larson with many medals on ribbons around his neck.
It’s a time of tears and laughter down here at Mad Swede. Jerry took down his displayed medals  as the brewery and taproom hosted its final Farewell Party on Tuesday evening, October 14, 2025.

It’s been an incredible 9 years serving you Boise, but it’s time to put our longship out to sea and sail on to the next adventure. Thank you for so many incredible parties and meaningful moments building community and enjoying delicious craft beer with you. We’ve hosted your birthday parties, work mixers, live shows, and open mics. We’ve hosted weddings and wakes. We’ve watched kids go from being just a twinkle in their father’s eye to running around the tasting room. You helped make this place special. It’s been an honor and a privilege to serve you!

Jerry and Susie are looking forward to letting their many creative hobbies flourish in retirement, and making many memories with their new grand baby.

The Mad Swede Downtown Brew Hall will remain OPEN through the end of the year!!

Can you make a Belgian double black rye IPA?

Brewer holding a glass of dark beer with a worried and challenged look on his face.

…Is a random gauntlet we threw down for Jerry years ago, way back when he was still a homebrewer. It was the weirdest beer we could think of in that moment. Challenge accepted! Well, our brewmaster recently felt like making something unusual, and so dusted off that old recipe to give it a new try! This delightfully strange and delicious concoction is earthy, spicy, funky, and hoppy. Like the angst of Laplander reindeer herders mixed with the musk of their ungulate charges. You kind of just have to taste it! Available on tap at both Mad Swede locations.

THIS MONTH DOWNTOWN:

Comedian Grant Lyon

May is jam-packed with touring headliners from all over the Western US! Grant Lyon is a hilarious LA-based comic with a long resume of national successes, but before him we have Adam Broud headlining out of Salt Lake City and Ty Boice coming from Portland with three unique comedy shows. There’s really something for everyone! To stay up to date on all of our downtown comedy shenanigans, click below to…

We hope you’ve enjoyed the return of Brewmaster Jerry’s favorite beer as much as we have. It was a hit at Alefort (Treefort Music Festival’s beer fest), and it’s been a hit in both of our taprooms. Such a hit that we’re running low on it! Make sure to come grab a pint or a growler-fill before it’s gone!

The India Pale Ale: Nerdy Beer History

Hand holding glass pouring an India Pale Ale from a beer faucet into a glass.

Whether it’s our seasonal offerings like the Lost Viking Tropical IPA or the Shieldmaiden Black IPA, or our permanent staples like our Longship IPA or the Sunstone Hazy IPA, our IPA’s are definitely some of our most popular beer creations!

While IPA stands for “India Pale Ale”, the IPA was actually created in London in the 18th Century and shipped to India. Both the additional hops and high alcohol helped to preserve the beer during its long sea journey from England to India. This created a bitter and stronger pale ale that was more refreshing in the hot Indian climate compared to the dark ales and porters that were popular in London. And thus the India Pale Ale was born…

And the rest is, well… history! The IPA has become the de-facto staple of the craft brewery scene, with creations ranging from tropical, to hazy, to imperials, and everything in-between. What is YOUR favorite Mad Swede IPA?

Upcoming events at Mad Swede Brew Hall

A Comedy Weekend Triple-Header!

Mad Swede Brew Hall is bringing the laughs this weekend with a triple feature of standup comedy.

September 20th we are hosting the Decrepit Comedy Exhibit; a special evening of comedy featuring standup comedians with disabilities and quirks, hosted and curated by Boise’s own Victor Pellegrino!

Hailing all the way from Seattle, Washington, we are so excited to welcome Monica Nevi for two shows of headlining comedy featuring some local favorite comics on September 21st!

Fresh Hop!

Fresh Cashmere Hops

Fresh hop Lost Viking Tropical IPA is now available exclusively in our tasting room on south Cole Road! This beer is our Lost Viking with a twist. It features fresh Cashmere hops grown by Gooding Farms.

The morning of the brew, Jerry and his assistant Mike got the mash cooking, while Cody drove out to Mill 95 and waited for the hops to arrive. As soon as he had the fresh hops in hand, Cody rushed them back to Mad Swede. We made hop tea bags and combined them with the boiling wort. Then magic happened!

Watch our mini-documentary for a behind-the-scenes peek of fresh hop day at Mad Swede. After you’ve watched, come on in to our tasting room for a pint of this limited release Lost Viking tropical IPA!
